Ray V. Cloud first published Edmonds: The Gem of Puget Sound in 1953, and The Edmonds-South Snohomish County Historical Society reprinted it in 1963. The Gem of Puget Sound was Ray’s gift to Edmonds. He created it by combing through the files of The Tribune-Review and the previous papers over the period from 1904, when The Edmonds Review was first published, to 1953. Ray served as the publisher for 30 years, starting from when he and his wife acquired it from W. H. Schumacher in 1921. The Clouds were already experienced newspaper people. For much of that time, The Tribune-Review covered local events, issues, personalities, businesses, and gossip, and at times made news itself. Its advertising and classifieds connected the community. For a time, it even included content from the Edmonds High School newspaper, The Wireless. Over this period, Edmonds grew from a mill town of 1,114 to a major city in the region. His review, then, has been perhaps the single most comprehensive source for historians interested in Edmonds and the surrounding area. This third edition includes “In Days Gone by: A history of Edmonds’ early newspapers” by Byron Wilkes. Read more
